It is a thrilling time for the Dutch pigeon sport. While the spring sun brings our birds into peak condition, bureaucratic reality forces us to remain patient for just a little longer. Here is the current state of affairs as of April 2, 2026, focusing on the balance between current restrictions and the hopeful signals for the upcoming season.

1. Current Status: Why the crates remain closed

At this moment, a national ban on the gathering of birds remains in effect in the Netherlands, directly impacting the basketing for races and training tosses.

  • National Measures: Since the autumn of 2025, confinement and shielding requirements have been in place. For racing pigeons, this means they are allowed to fly for their daily exercise around the loft, but transport and gathering (basketing) are currently prohibited.

  • Local Outbreaks: Recent outbreaks in Geesbrug and Oudemolen (March 21) have resulted in strict 10-kilometer zones where any transport of birds is strictly forbidden. Fanciers in these regions must prepare for a “lockdown” of their athletes until well into April.

2. The Silver Lining: Strong hope for easing

Despite the current limitations, there is a clear sense of optimism in the air. The NPO (National Pigeon Organization) is leading the charge:

  • Lobbying in The Hague: The NPO is in intensive consultations with the Ministry of LVVN. The core of their defense is scientific evidence proving that racing pigeons are not a risk factor for the spread of current bird flu strains.

  • Positive Signals: Senior officials have acknowledged that the pigeon sport has a unique character compared to the commercial poultry sector. A protocol is being developed to allow the sport to restart, provided it takes place outside active infection zones.

  • Release of Zones: There is good news for certain regions; restrictions in Lunteren are expected to be lifted tomorrow (April 3), followed by Neede on April 5 and Putten on April 8. This paves the way for a phased restart of the racing program.

3. Preparing for the “Green Flag”

The general expectation within the federation is that, provided no major new outbreaks occur, the first official basketings can take place during the course of April.

  • 2026 Racing Program: Flight directors already have alternative scenarios ready to shift or shorten early sprint races, ensuring the birds can still get the necessary miles in before the heavy lifting later this season.

  • Athlete Health: Veterinarians report that the birds look “remarkably sharp” due to the mild spring. The extra rest at the loft even seems to give some lofts a head start in building condition.

The bottom line for today: The sport’s flag is still at half-mast, but the mast is firmly anchored. We are in the starting blocks, backed by strong arguments and a fervent desire to see the sky turn blue with wings once again.
