On Friday, September 25, 2026, at precisely 06:50:00 AM, the baskets opened for 552 entered feathered warriors. Their objective? Cover 805 kilometers back to the lofts in Sasolburg / Marlbank.
The conditions in the Trans Karoo region are notorious. You face scorching heat during the day, bitter cold in the early South African Highveld mornings, unpredictable crosswinds, and extreme dryness. Not to mention the birds of prey. A pigeon that makes it through here possesses not just raw speed, but an ironclad sense of orientation and an indomitable willpower.
The fact that only a single pigeon managed to reach the loft on the day of liberation speaks volumes about the sheer brutality of this race.

At 07:05:32 PM, as dusk fell over the landscape after more than 12 hours of continuous flight, Willie’s Blue Bar champion (ZA-25-ZA-123) clocked into the Benzing electronic timing system. Clocking an average speed of 1143.47 m/min over 805 kilometers, this relentless athlete claimed 1st place!
What gives this victory a golden glow: it was the only pigeon to arrive on the day of release. While the rest of the field had to spend the night out in the wild South African terrain, Willie Munnik’s winner was already sitting comfortably on its perch. Pure class. A world-class performance that every breeder and fancier dreams of achieving!
