1. Breeding & Genetics (15 questions)
Are pedigrees important when mating?
A pedigree tells you what a pigeon should be, but performance and physical qualities tell you what the pigeon actually is, guys! Use the pedigree as a guide to trace winning bloodlines, but always select based on the hard reality in your hands and on the race sheets!
Can mating family members (inbreeding) do any harm?
Fanciers, inbreeding is a razor-sharp knife! It is the ultimate way to lock in those iron-clad genes, but watch out: it also magnifies the flaws. Only mate father x daughter or brother x sister if both are super healthy and of absolute top-class. Weaklings have no place here, cull them ruthlessly and immediately!
How do I feed young pigeons that have just been weaned?
When they have just left their parents, they must learn to eat and drink immediately. Give them a light, easily digestible, protein-rich mixture and show them the way to the drinker by briefly dipping their beak in it. They must become independent right away, no pampering!
How do I prevent eggs from freezing during winter breeding?
Use wooden or plastic nest bowls with a thick, warm nest felt and provide plenty of nesting material like tobacco stems or straw. Is it extremely cold? Use a heating pad under the bowl or floor heating. Frozen eggs are purely a management failure!
How long does a pigeon hatch its eggs?
Very simple: 17 to 18 days after the second egg is laid. No panic if it takes a day longer in cold weather, but don't go messing around with them. Let nature do its job and keep the peace in the breeding loft!
How many pairs should I keep in my breeding loft?
Quality over quantity, always! Short on space? Better to keep 5 absolute top-class pairs than 20 mediocre pairs that only cause overcrowding and disease. Every single pair must earn its right to be there.
How do I recognize a top-quality breeding pigeon?
Don't just look at a paper pedigree, fanciers! A real top breeder is recognized by silky-soft plumage, a perfectly closed vent, an eye overflowing with vitality and pigment, and a natural resistance that makes you say 'wow'. But the ultimate test? Their offspring. Good breeders breed good racers!
Should I darken breeding pigeons?
No, you don't darken breeding pigeons! They need light and warmth to get into the right hormone balance for breeding. Save the darkening system for your young racing team to delay their molt!
What is crossbreeding and why does it work?
Crossbreeding is mating two different, closely inbred lines. This gives an enormous boost in vitality and power, which we call heterosis. It is the fastest route to winners in the sport! Breed in line, cross for racers!
What is the best age for a breeding pigeon?
Pigeons from 2 to 7 years old often produce the most vital young, but a true 'super breeder' can fertilize until 12 or 15 years old if they receive top care. As long as the vitality is there and they keep producing quality offspring, that veteran gets to stay!
What is the secret of a good compensation mating?
Compensation mating is just pure logic! Does the cock have a slightly too long back? Pair him with a hen that is compact and perfectly built. Never mate two pigeons with the same flaw, because then you just multiply the misery!
What should I do if a hen does not lay eggs?
No eggs means something is wrong with the basics. Is she too fat? Is it paratyphus or a calcium deficiency? Give her rest, put her on a lean diet with plenty of exercise, give extra minerals, and consult the vet when in doubt. Don't just keep messing around!
When can young pigeons be weaned?
Youngsters can be weaned when they are between 23 and 25 days old. They should have plenty of feathers under their wings and be actively pecking at grains. Don't wait too long; they need to find their own way quickly in the young bird loft!
When should I mate my pigeons for early breeding?
Early breeding traditionally starts around late November or early December. But watch out: only do this if your lofts are dry, your pigeons are in peak health, and their molt is perfectly finished. If your heating and lighting aren't sorted, just wait until spring!
Why do pigeons sometimes lay only one egg?
Often this is a sign of exhaustion, a calcium deficiency, or an oncoming infection like paratyphus. In young hens, it could be inexperience; in old hens, it's often running on empty. Provide plenty of grit and vitamins in the loft, and give them the rest they need.
2. Health & Medical Care (20 questions)
Are antibiotics allowed during the racing season?
Only if it is absolutely medically necessary and on the advice of a specialized avian vet! Antibiotics break down natural condition and form. Those who blindly give antibiotics to fly better are digging their own athletic grave. Focus on natural resistance!
Coccidiosis in pigeons, how do I recognize it?
You recognize coccidiosis by watery, greenish droppings, puffed-up feathers, and pigeons that become sluggish and lose condition. It is an intestinal parasite that flourishes in damp lofts. Keep your lofts bone-dry, guys, and you won't give coccidiosis a single chance!
How do I treat paratyphus (salmonella) effectively?
Paratyphus is a silent killer in the loft. Do you have lame pigeons, hanging wings, or unfertilized eggs? Take action immediately! Treat with a targeted antibiotic course via the vet, cure before breeding if necessary, and vaccinate your pigeons to build up immunity.
How do I control lice and mites in the loft?
Parasites suck the energy right out of your athletes! Use an effective drop in the neck like ivermectin before the racing season and regularly burn out your lofts with a gas torch to destroy the eggs of the red mite in the cracks.
How do I prevent ornithosis and respiratory problems?
Respiratory problems are almost always caused by a poor loft climate! Drafts and a lack of oxygen are the main culprits. Ensure perfect ventilation, prevent overcrowding, and support them with natural herbs or supplements that clear the airways.
How do I recognize 'the yellow' (trichomoniasis) in my pigeons?
You can see trichomoniasis immediately when you open the beak: yellow, cheesy spots in the throat. But beware, it is often invisibly latent and they just perform poorly. Have a throat swab checked regularly or use preventive yellow drops!
How do I recognize a healthy pigeon at a glance?
A healthy pigeon shines! She has chalk-white wattles and eye-rings, a glossy, powder-rich plumage that sheds water instantly, and tight, dry dropping balls. She trains with joy and storms the feeder when you shake the bin!
How do I recognize worms in pigeons?
Pigeons with worms lose weight rapidly despite eating a lot, have a dull plumage, and show bad droppings. You can only truly rule out hairworms or roundworms with a fecal exam under the microscope. Keep things clean and disinfect your lofts thoroughly!
How do I restore intestinal flora after an antibiotic course?
Antibiotics wipe out all the good gut bacteria. Restore this immediately by giving probiotics and gut conditioners like brewer's yeast or specially acidified drinking water for 2 to 3 days after the course. Help the good bacteria back onto the throne!
How important is dropping 'yellow drops' before basketing?
Yellow drops, often based on acriflavine and administered directly into the throat or nose, is a popular method to preventatively suppress trichomoniasis without putting heavy medications in the drinking water. It keeps their heads clean for the start!
How often should I vaccinate my pigeons?
No discussion about this: vaccinating against Paramyxovirus is mandatory and done annually. In addition, I strongly advise vaccinating your young birds against Pox and potentially Paratyphus and Herpes. Prevention is a thousand times better than cure!
What is 'one-eye cold' and what do I do about it?
This is an eye inflammation where one eye becomes wet and the pigeon starts scratching it. It is often a mild form of the ornithosis complex. Without giving antibiotics immediately: separate the pigeon in an oxygen-rich, draft-free environment and apply soothing eye drops.
What is paramyxovirus and how do I recognize the symptoms?
Paramyxovirus is a deadly virus that attacks the nervous system. You recognize it by watery droppings with lots of urine, terrifying twisting of the neck, and paralysis. There is no cure, only preventive vaccination protects your colony!
What is the danger of molds in the loft?
Molds in the loft like Aspergillus severely attack the respiratory tract of the pigeon and ruin any form of racing condition. Molds grow in damp, poorly ventilated lofts with accumulated manure. Keep it dry and clean thoroughly!
What is the value of a fecal exam by the vet?
Measuring is knowing, guys! Blindly treating with medications destroys the natural resistance and form of your pigeons. Take a collective fecal sample to an avian vet every few weeks or before crucial periods like breeding and racing. Only medicate when absolutely necessary!
What should I do in case of young bird disease (adeno-coli)?
If your young birds stop eating, start vomiting, and get greenish-watery diarrhea, you have Adeno in the loft. Stop heavy feeding immediately! Give them easily digestible feed, electrolytes in the water, and support the gut with probiotics and acids. Keep the loft stress-free!
What should I do against pox in pigeons?
Pox is recognized by wart-like growths on the unfeathered parts of the head or in the oral cavity. The virus is spread by mosquitoes and mutual contact. Vaccinate your pigeons on time in spring! Already got it? Dab the pox with iodine and keep them strictly separated.
Why do my pigeons have blue breast muscles?
Blue breast muscles indicate a lack of oxygen in the muscles, poor circulation, or overload. Healthy, fit pigeons in form should have a pink, flake-free breast. Give them rest, plenty of oxygen in the loft, and light recovery feed!
Why do my pigeons have watery droppings?
Watery droppings can have many causes: stress, Adeno, worms, coccidiosis, or simply drinking too much water in hot weather. Look at the basics first: is the loft dry? Do they have grit? If the droppings don't recover after two days, have them tested by a specialized vet.
Why are my pigeons rattling or wheezing?
This is the classic respiratory or ornithosis complex. It indicates irritated mucous membranes and stuck mucus. Cause: poor ventilation, drafts, or overcrowding. Solve the loft problem first and support medically if needed to clear the airways.
3. Nutrition & Supplements (15 questions)
Are fats important for long-distance (fond) races?
Grains contain carbohydrates, but fats deliver more than twice as much usable energy per gram! For flights above 400 kilometers (250 miles), pigeons need fatty fuel to fly non-stop for hours without breaking down their own muscle tissue.
Can pigeons eat peanuts and why?
Peanuts are absolute energy bombs! They are packed with fats and proteins, ideal for loading pigeons up for the heavy marathon races. Only feed peanuts of impeccable human-grade quality, completely free from molds, and teach them to eat from your hand beforehand.
Can pigeons be given liquid sheep fat?
Nutritional powerhouse! Sheep fat is a fantastic source of fatty acids that provides extra energy reserves and a super soft, glossy plumage. Mix the liquefied sheep fat over the feed and dry it off with brewer's yeast or mineral powder.
How do I build up my pigeons' energy towards a tough race?
Start early in the week light and easily digestible. As basketing approaches in the last 3 to 4 days, switch to an energy-rich racing mixture full of fats like corn, peanuts, and sunflower seeds. Feed them plenty so the tank is completely full!
How important is protein-rich feed after a race?
After a race, the muscle micro-tears must recover. Proteins from legumes like peas, tares, and beans are the building blocks that make this recovery possible. However, immediately upon arrival, first give them easily digestible carbohydrates, and provide the proteins later!
How important are grit and red stone for pigeons?
Vital! Grit is the pigeon's teeth; they need it in the gizzard to grind up the hard grains. Red stone delivers crucial minerals and trace elements. Ensure that a fresh bowl of dry grit is available in the loft every day!
How much feed should a racing pigeon get per day?
On average, a pigeon eats about 30 grams of feed per day, but this depends on the distance and the weather. Feed with your eyes, guys! They must empty their trays. If they start selecting and leaving the barley behind, you are simply feeding too heavy or too much.
Is garlic in the drinking water really that good?
Yes, garlic is a great natural product. It purifies the blood, supports the gut, and keeps parasites at bay. But don't overdo it: one or two days a week a clove in the water is more than enough to keep them fit!
What does apple cider vinegar do for a pigeon's resistance?
Apple cider vinegar acidifies the drinking water to an optimal pH value. In an acidic environment, harmful bacteria such as E. Coli and trichomonads find it much harder to multiply. It is a simple, effective way to naturally support gut health.
What is the best nutrition during the molting period?
During the molt, pigeons must build a complete new plumage in a short time. This requires a protein-rich and fat-rich mixture with plenty of sulfur-containing amino acids found in rapeseed, linseed, and sunflower seeds. A bad molt means a lost season!
What is the value of brewer's yeast over the feed?
Brewer's yeast is packed with B-vitamins, amino acids, and minerals. It supports muscle building, gut flora, and feather quality. Stick it to the feed with a healthy oil like garlic oil or peanut oil for optimal effect.
What is the value of vitamins during the season?
Vitamins support metabolism and the immune system during heavy exertion. Preferably give them one day in the middle of the week. Note: do not overdo it, because an excess of synthetic vitamins burdens the pigeon's liver!
When do I give electrolytes to my pigeons?
Give electrolytes immediately upon arrival from a tough or hot race. It ensures lightning-fast recovery of the fluid balance and replenishes lost salts and minerals. This makes sure your pigeons train freshly around the loft the very next day!
Which grains give pigeons the most energy?
Corn, safflower, sunflower seeds, hemp with its supreme germination power, and peanuts are the absolute frontrunners when it comes to usable flight energy. Barley and paddy rice are perfect for keeping the pigeons calm and relieving the intestines.
Why do pigeons sometimes drink too much water?
If pigeons drink abnormally much, which causes wet droppings, there is often a salt deficiency, gut irritation, Adeno, or stress. Also check if the drinking water hasn't become too hot in the sun. Provide fresh, cool water and minerals.
4. Training, Systems & Racing (20 questions)
How do I prepare pigeons for a heat race?
In extreme heat, pigeons must go into the basket with an optimal fluid balance. Feed energy-rich but not too protein-rich in the final days, because burning proteins generates excess internal heat. Give them plenty of minerals and electrolytes beforehand and basket them cool.
How do I handle pigeons flying the wrong way during training?
If pigeons fly the wrong way in mass during training around the loft, it is often an orientation error due to weather conditions like an inversion or heavy gusts. Bring them in, don't force anything, and wait for a better moment.
How long should young pigeons be darkened?
Maintain a period of at least 12 to a maximum of 14 hours of complete darkness per day. Make sure the loft is truly dark, but don't forget ventilation! Fresh air must always circulate, even when it is dark.
How do I train my young pigeons for the first time?
Step by step, guys! Start by putting them in the basket in the loft to get used to it. Then take them away at very short distances: 1 km, 2 km, 5 km, 10 km. Always release them individually or in small groups in clear, calm weather. Build their confidence!
How do I motivate young pigeons on the sliding door?
The sliding door game is fantastic for young birds! Keep the young cocks and hens strictly separated during the week. On basketing day, pull the sliding door open and let them hang out and build nests together for a few hours. They are guaranteed to race home like lightning!
How do I motivate widowers for a race?
Motivation is the key to early prizes! Let them see their hen very briefly before basketing, or sometimes just showing the nest bowl is enough. Play on their jealousy by showing another cock in their nest box. But beware: do not over-motivate them for long distances, or they will waste their energy in the basket!
How do I stimulate the training drive of my pigeons?
Training drive is the gauge of health! Ensure an oxygen-rich loft and light feeding during the week. You can use the flag to encourage them, but real top condition ensures they seek the horizon for an hour on their own. Health means training!
How often should I toss (train) my pigeons myself?
Before the season, toss them about 4 to 6 times to get into the rhythm. During the season, it is advisable for young birds to give them a short mid-week toss of 10 to 15 km to keep the motivation and sharpness high.
How often should racing pigeons train around the loft?
For top performance, they should train intensively twice a day for a full hour with joy. They should fly out of sight and really stretch their wings. Do they train reluctantly or land on the roof after 10 minutes? Then there is a medical issue or the loft climate is wrong!
How do I ensure a fast trap (entry) after the race?
Trapping must be an automatic habit! Teach them from an early age that the rattle or whistle means FOOD! Never feed them too fat or too much before training, because a full pigeon will happily sit on the roof for hours.
How much rest does a pigeon need after a tough middle-distance race?
Count on at least 2 to 3 days of recovery feed and rest around the loft before fully loading them again. Don't force them to train for an hour the day after a tough race; let them stroll and recover quietly.
Can young birds be raced on their first eggs?
Yes, that can give an enormous motivation boost! Especially young hens that have just mated and are sitting on their first eggs can deliver fantastic performances. Just make sure the eggs don't get cold if they have to stay in the basket too long.
When should I start darkening young pigeons?
Start immediately when weaning the first round, often early March, and continue until June 21st. Darken from around 6:00 PM in the evening until 8:00 AM in the morning. This stops the molt of the flight feathers, so they can start the race season with a full wing!
What is lighting (extending daylight) and why do we do it?
Lighting is done from mid-July to artificially keep the days long, up to 16 to 18 hours of light. You do this to block the molt of the feathers even longer, so your pigeons can continue flying in perfect feather condition until the end of the season in September.
What is the natural system (nest play) and how does it work?
Nest play is the oldest system where pigeons are raced on a natural nest position. The absolute top position for a hen is flying on eggs of 10 to 12 days old, or on a small youngster of 4 to 6 days. Their urge to protect the nest is unmatched!
What is the game on the dry nest bowl?
This is a motivation trick where you let the pigeons build nests and chase, but you remove the eggs immediately and replace them with a bare nest bowl. The urge to defend the spot can provide an enormous speed boost on short races!
What is total widowhood and how do I play it?
In total widowhood, both cocks and hens race. They see each other briefly before basketing and come back together upon arrival. This saves you a lot of stay-at-homes and you immediately discover the racing qualities of both sexes!
What is the advantage of playing racing hens on the perch?
This prevents the hens from mating with each other. By keeping them on small perches where they can barely stand, they have no room to pair up and remain completely focused on their cock waiting at home.
What is the widowhood racing system?
This is the classic game where the partner stays at home waiting. The racing cock is motivated by the longing for his hen and his own territory in the nest box. It is a highly effective system that ensures incredible focus and speed.
What to do if a pigeon returns too late from a race?
Directly give her lukewarm water with electrolytes and a very light digestible mixture. Put her separately in a quiet, warm environment so she can recover without stress from the other pigeons. Only let her train again when she is fully recovered!
5. The Pigeon Loft & Loft Management (15 questions)
How important is a dry pigeon loft?
A dry loft is 90% of your success, guys! Moisture is the pigeon's biggest enemy and the best friend of pathogens. A good loft smells fresh, feels dry, and has no condensation on the windows. Is your loft damp? Install a heat source or adjust the ventilation immediately!
How do I fight moisture in the loft during rainy days?
When it's pouring outside, the humidity rises instantly. On such days, use mild heating plates or hygrometer-controlled heaters to make the loft just 2 degrees warmer than outside. This drops the relative humidity immediately!
How do I create the perfect ventilation in my loft?
Perfect ventilation works on the natural thermal principle: warm, used air rises and leaves the loft through a sliding vent in the ceiling above the corridor, never directly above the pigeons! Fresh air enters calmly through the front. No mechanical fans unless strictly necessary!
How do I deal with mice and rats in the loft?
Pests carry diseases like paratyphus and disrupt your pigeons' night rest. Never feed loose grains on the floor where leftovers remain. Keep your feed in hermetically sealed bins and place traps where pigeons absolutely cannot reach them.
How do I disinfect my loft after a disease outbreak?
First, scrape away all manure and dirt mechanically. Then, thoroughly burn the nest boxes and floors with a gas torch, keeping safety first. Next, disinfect with a broad-spectrum disinfectant suitable for animal housing and let the loft air out thoroughly.
How often should I clean the pigeon loft?
Cleaning every day is the golden standard for a top fancier! Scrape the manure daily from the perches and floor to prevent dust formation and bacterial growth. Do you have a dry loft with straw? Then you can leave it longer, provided it stays bone-dry.
How do I prevent drafts in the pigeon loft?
Drafts are a silent killer of form! Ensure the wind can never blow directly on the pigeons. The air inlet must always run through the front bottom and the outlet through the back or roof above the birds. Test it with a smoke generator!
How many pigeons can I keep per cubic meter of loft space?
As a rule of thumb: maximum 2 to 3 racing pigeons per cubic meter of air volume. Overcrowding inevitably leads to oxygen shortage, stress, territorial fights, and rapid spread of infections. Give your athletes space!
Is a wooden loft better than a brick/stone loft?
Wood naturally has better moisture-regulating and insulating properties than brick. A wooden loft responds faster to temperature changes and breathes better. A brick loft can remain clammy and cold in spring, but with the right insulation it can be made perfectly usable.
Should a pigeon loft face southeast?
Southeast is the ideal direction because your loft benefits from the early morning sun. The sun warms up the loft quickly and dries out morning dampness. Facing another way? Don't panic, you can compensate effectively with glass plates or artificial heating!
Why is oxygen more important than warmth in the loft?
Oxygen builds condition and muscles! A cold but oxygen-rich and dry loft is a thousand times better than a warm, stuffy, and oxygen-depleted loft where ammonia fumes hit you. Pigeons have fantastic feathers to keep themselves warm!
Why should nest boxes be dark during rest periods?
Dark, quiet corners in the nest box give pigeons a sense of security and territory. During rest periods during the week, it helps to keep the pigeons calm and prevent unnecessary fights or premature mating.
What is the best floor cover for the pigeon loft?
If you don't want to clean daily, dry beech chips, straw, or special lava granules are excellent options. They absorb moisture from the droppings perfectly. But beware: as soon as it gets damp, everything must come out immediately!
What is the ideal temperature in a pigeon loft?
Pigeons can easily handle cold, but fluctuations are damaging. The ideal temperature lies between 15 and 22 degrees Celsius with humidity around 60%. Above all, make sure the loft does not get ice-cold and damp at night compared to daytime.
What is the purpose of a sputnik and how big should it be?
The sputnik is the runway and entry point for your pigeons. It must be big enough so several pigeons can land at the same time and be guided inside via the trap gates. Ensure a good view inside, so they see the food standing!
6. Orientation, Navigation & Release Policy (15 questions)
How does wind direction affect orientation?
Wind has a mechanical and biological influence. A strong sidewind drifts pigeons sideways, forcing them to constantly correct their course. Additionally, wind affects the distribution of scent molecules in the air, which pigeons use for their olfactory map.
How does the sun's position affect the pigeon's compass?
The pigeon uses the sun as an active compass. She corrects the sun's position throughout the day with her internal biological clock. Is the sun directly overhead or completely invisible due to thick, contrastless clouds? Then this navigation source falls away.
How do I restore orientation ability after a tough race?
Orientation costs a lot of mental energy! Recovery starts with physical recovery: immediately give them water with electrolytes and vitamins to restore the fluid balance in the brain. Ensure absolute rest in the loft, so the battery recharges quickly for the next job.
How do racing pigeons orient themselves during flight?
Pigeons are biological wonders! They navigate using a combination of sophisticated systems: an internal compass based on the earth's magnetic field, the position of the sun and UV light patterns, olfactory maps, infrasound, and visual landmarks on the ground.
How do pigeons react to high-voltage power lines and cell towers?
High-voltage cables pose a physical danger of collision, especially during mass releases under stress. Cell towers and strong electromagnetic fields can also temporarily disrupt the pigeon's magnetic compass locally, forcing them to search for the correct course briefly.
Why is a magnetic storm disastrous for a race?
Solar flares cause disturbances in the earth's magnetic field. Because the pigeon has an internal magnetic compass, this compass gets completely scrambled during a magnetic storm. This often results in unexplainable smash races even in clear weather.
Why is releasing more than just pressing a button?
Because the atmosphere is a living, dynamic landscape! Responsible releasing requires deep understanding of the interaction between pigeon biology and meteorological conditions. You must be able to read the weather and have the courage to wait when it is not 100% safe.
Why don't we release pigeons too early in the morning?
Releasing too early means the sun is still too low and thermals have not yet started. Moreover, early mornings often bring ground fog or hanging humidity that blocks vision. Wait until the atmosphere is stable and awake!
Why shouldn't pigeons be released in dense fog?
Fog not only blocks ground vision but also disrupts the angle of sunlight and UV rays essential for the pigeon's compass. Releasing in fog is asking for disastrous losses; the pigeons get disoriented immediately.
What does UV light do to a pigeon's navigation?
Pigeons can perceive polarized UV light, even through thick cloud cover! This allows them to determine the exact position of the sun. Is there extremely heavy, uniform cloud cover without any UV contrast? Then navigating becomes extremely difficult.
What is the impact of transport stress on orientation?
Huge! Stress in the basket due to overheating, lack of oxygen, or thirst leads to a disruption of fluid balance and reduced brain activity. A stressed pigeon cannot properly analyze her internal navigation maps upon release and gets lost much faster.
What is the role of thermals in flying long distances?
Thermals are rising currents of warm air. Pigeons make smart use of this to gain altitude without burning precious flight energy. Especially on heavy marathon races, good thermals help the pigeons slide smoothly and efficiently over vast distances.
What is an inversion and why is it dangerous for pigeons?
An inversion is a weather situation where warm air sits above cold air. This creates an invisible mirror in the atmosphere that refracts sound waves, scents, and light rays. It scrambles the pigeon's orientation gigantically in the first crucial minutes after release!
What is the importance of the 'start condition' when releasing?
The start condition determines everything! In the first 5 to 10 minutes after release, the pigeon must set her course. If the air conditions at the release site are perfect at that moment, the group departs directly in the correct direction. A poor start condition leads to hours of wandering.
What should be done if a release is delayed?
If the release is delayed to the next day, the pigeons in the truck must be kept calm. Ensure plenty of ventilation, cool conditions, and give them water on time. As a fancier at home, stay calm and trust the decision of the release committee!
