Berger Pearls, One small pearl brings energy, gut support, functional nutrition and everyday simplicity together
There is one thing I keep seeing in pigeon sport. We make feeding more complicated than it needs to be.
One product for the intestines. Another for vitamins. Another for recovery. Another oil. Another powder. Another pot that needs to be measured, mixed and remembered. Before long, the feeding cabinet looks more complicated than the racing calendar.
That is exactly why BergerPearls No.1 caught my attention.
This is not just another supplement that has been added to an already crowded market. Berger PIGEONS has tried to rethink the whole idea of supplementation by putting several important nutritional functions into one practical pearl. Energy, protein, probiotics, prebiotics, beta glucans, colostrum, medium chain fatty acids, vitamins, trace elements, digestive support and toxin binding components are brought together in a product that can simply be mixed through the normal grain ration.
For me, that makes BergerPearls No.1 genuinely interesting.
Not because pigeon racing suddenly becomes easy. It never will. But because good pigeon management should be understandable, consistent and practical. The easier it becomes to provide the right nutritional support every day, the greater the chance that fanciers actually stick to a good system.
Good pigeons deserve more than grain alone
A racing pigeon is an athlete.
During the racing season we ask our birds to train, travel, handle stress, recover and perform again. During breeding they must raise strong youngsters. During the moult they have to construct an entirely new feather coat. Young pigeons have their own challenges while their digestive and immune systems are developing.
Nutrition therefore has to do much more than simply fill the crop.
BergerPearls No.1 starts with a peanut based matrix. According to the official product declaration, the finished product contains 20 percent crude protein and 20 percent crude fat. That gives the pearl a serious nutritional foundation rather than making it only a carrier for additional ingredients. The formula then adds a broad range of functional components aimed at supporting digestion, the intestinal environment, nutrient availability and the general nutritional needs of the pigeon.
This combination is what separates the concept from many traditional supplements.
You are not simply sprinkling vitamins over the feed. You are feeding something that also brings meaningful energy and protein into the ration.

The gut is where a lot of good management begins
Ask experienced pigeon fanciers about form and sooner or later the conversation comes back to the intestines.
It makes sense.
A pigeon can only make good use of what we feed when digestion is functioning properly. BergerPearls No.1 therefore contains both probiotics and prebiotic components. The product declaration specifically lists Bacillus subtilis and Enterococcus faecium among its zootechnical additives, together with fibre sources and digestive enzymes.
BergerPIGEONSÂ positions these ingredients as part of a broader strategy to support the intestinal microbiome. That matters because modern pigeon management places enormous pressure on digestion. Changing feed mixtures, transportation, competition, environmental stress and periods of heavy work all challenge the bird.
I like the philosophy behind this.
Do not wait until the droppings look wrong and then start searching through the cupboard for a solution. Build good daily nutrition into the system before problems appear.
That does not mean any supplement makes veterinary care unnecessary. It certainly does not. A sick pigeon still needs proper diagnosis and treatment when required.
What good nutrition can do is give the pigeon a stronger nutritional foundation from which to work.
More than probiotics in a pellet
This is where BergerPearls No.1 becomes more interesting.
The formulation also contains beta glucans and colostrum powder, together with vitamins A, D3, E and C and several trace elements. BergerPIGEONS describes these ingredients as part of the product’s nutritional approach to immune function, recovery and general resilience.
Medium chain fatty acids are another important part of the formula. BergerPIGEONS uses them as part of its approach to intestinal stability and microbial management. The company also includes bentonite, clinoptilolite and sepiolite in the formulation as binding components within the digestive tract.
Look at the total picture and you begin to understand why the product is called a functional pearl.
There is a nutritional reason behind the ingredients.
And importantly, the ingredients are not simply thrown into a bag of grain. BergerPIGEONS says the manufacturing process is designed to be gentle enough to protect sensitive components such as probiotics and vitamins while producing a pearl small enough to mix through ordinary pigeon feed.
That practical detail matters.
A brilliant formula that pigeons refuse to eat is not very brilliant at all.
The real revolution is simplicity
For me, this is probably the strongest argument for BergerPearls No.1.
We pigeon fanciers love products.
Sometimes perhaps a little too much.
It is easy to end up with an impressive collection of bottles, powders and containers, while losing sight of the actual goal. The pigeon does not care how many products are standing on the shelf. The pigeon needs the right nutrients, in sensible quantities, delivered consistently.
BergerPearls No.1 attacks that problem from the opposite direction.
Instead of asking what else we can add, Berger asks how many useful functions can intelligently be brought together.
That is a very modern way of looking at pigeon nutrition.
The official Berger article explains the idea as replacing several separate daily supplements with one combined nutritional concept. Probiotics, prebiotics, vitamins, functional fatty acids, immune related nutritional components and other ingredients are delivered together instead of being managed independently.
For a beginner, that makes feeding easier to understand.
For an experienced fancier, it can make the daily routine considerably cleaner.
And for somebody with a large team of pigeons, saving time without abandoning nutritional quality is worth a lot.
One product for much more than the racing season
Another reason I like BergerPearls No.1 is that it is not designed around one race weekend.
The product has applications throughout the pigeon year.
During breeding, protein, energy, vitamins and minerals all play important roles while parents are feeding youngsters. During the moult, the nutritional demand changes again as pigeons replace their feathers. During racing, energy supply, digestion and recovery become especially important. During quieter periods, the nutritional load is lower but maintaining a stable feeding system can still have value.
The manufacturer’s general recommendation is 2 to 4 grams per pigeon per day depending on the purpose. Berger gives 2 grams per pigeon daily as guidance during growth related periods such as breeding, rearing and moulting, while the recommended quantity during winter rest is 1 gram per pigeon daily. Berger also publishes specific short term feeding recommendations for periods of increased demand.
That flexibility makes sense to me.
You do not drive your car at maximum speed every day, and you should not feed racing pigeons as though every week of the year is National Barcelona.
Nutrition should follow the physiological situation of the bird.

Why consistency matters more than miracle cures
There is no pearl, powder or potion that turns an ordinary pigeon into a champion.
I want to make that very clear.
Great pigeons still need genetics, health, intelligent training, good loft conditions and a fancier who actually watches them.
But nutrition matters.
And consistency matters enormously.
One of the biggest mistakes in pigeon sport is changing everything when form disappears. Suddenly a completely new mixture appears. Three new supplements go into the drinker. Something else goes over the feed. Then another product follows two days later because somebody at the club recommended it.
That is not a nutritional system. That is panic.
A product such as BergerPearls No.1 makes most sense when it becomes part of a controlled programme. Introduce the pigeons to it, use it consistently and adjust the quantity according to the period of the season and the condition of the birds.
Interestingly, Berger himself argues for starting early rather than waiting until the racing season is already underway. An existing Pigeon Boss article from Alfred Berger specifically recommends introducing the pearls during the quieter period so that the pigeons become accustomed to them before breeding and racing demands increase.
That philosophy deserves attention.
Build the pigeon first.
Then ask it to perform.
Pigeon Boss Approved thinking
What attracts me most to BergerPearls No.1 is not one ingredient.
It is the idea behind the product.
Pigeon sport needs innovation that makes the sport better and easier to practise. We need products that help serious fanciers manage their pigeons intelligently, but we also need systems that a new generation of pigeon enthusiasts can actually understand and use.
If modern pigeon feeding becomes a laboratory exercise involving twelve containers every morning, we are not making our sport more accessible.
BergerPearls No.1 goes in another direction.
One practical pearl. A substantial nutritional base. Several carefully selected functional components. Simple incorporation into the normal feed. One concept that can follow the pigeon through different stages of the year.
That is clever.
And perhaps more importantly, it encourages fanciers to think about nutrition as a system rather than as a collection of emergency products.
The Pigeon Boss verdict
I believe BergerPearls No.1 deserves serious consideration from fanciers who want to simplify their feeding programme without simplifying the quality of what goes into their pigeons.
- The concept is strong.
- The formulation is extensive.
- The application is practical.
And the philosophy fits the direction in which modern pigeon sport should move: better understanding, better nutrition, smarter management and fewer unnecessary complications.
- Do I believe one pearl wins the race for you?
- Of course not.
- The pigeon still has to fly home.
But if you can give that pigeon a more consistent nutritional foundation, support its digestion, provide quality energy and protein and make the whole system easier to manage every single day, then you are doing your job as a fancier.
That is why BergerPearls No.1 gets my attention.
Sometimes progress in pigeon sport does not arrive in a huge bag.
Sometimes it comes in one small pearl.
