Some victories deserve a closer look. Cornelis van Rijn from Nes aan de Amstel delivered exactly that on 18 July 2026, when his racing pigeon conquered Issoudun and claimed first prize in Fondclub Noord-Holland against 911 competing pigeons.
But the real strength of this performance becomes even clearer when you look beyond the winner.
At 16:12:07, Cornelis clocked a remarkable yearling pigeon that had completed the 624.229 kilometre journey from Issoudun in France. With an official velocity of 1,195.574 metres per minute, the bird secured the top position in the Fondclub Noord-Holland classification.
The race had started at 07:30 that morning. More than eight and a half hours later, Cornelis had a winner on his hands.
For the experienced racing pigeon enthusiast, however, the most impressive part of the story was still to come.
A Yearling That Was Already Showing Its Class
The winning pigeon, carrying ring number 5-1188323, was certainly no stranger to strong performances.
The yearling had already collected excellent results during the 2026 one day long distance season. In the official pigeon championship standings published alongside the Issoudun results, the bird occupied third position, having previously scored 497.1 points on race E25 and 494.5 points on E27.
At Issoudun, another maximum score of 500 points was added to that record.
That consistency tells an important story. Winning a major race is a fantastic achievement, but producing top performances across consecutive races is what makes a pigeon particularly interesting.
The winning velocity also deserves attention. Runner up Silvia van Zon from Wijdewormer recorded 1,161.349 metres per minute. Cornelis’s winner therefore held an advantage of more than 34 metres per minute in the official classification.
Against 911 pigeons, that is a victory worth celebrating.

Eight Prizes From Eleven Pigeons: The Real Strength of the Loft
A single winner can make a racing season memorable. But Cornelis van Rijn had considerably more to celebrate that afternoon.
He had entered eleven pigeons in the Issoudun race, and eight of them finished in the prizes.
His second arrival, ring number 5-1188326, was clocked at 16:36:26 and claimed an excellent 11th position overall.
That meant two pigeons among the first eleven of a field of 911.
The next arrivals secured 70th and 85th positions. Further pigeons followed in 113th, 167th, 173rd and 267th places.
Eight prize winners from just eleven basketed pigeons. A prize percentage of almost 73 percent.
These numbers are significant because they show more than the exceptional performance of one individual bird. They demonstrate the competitive depth of the team Cornelis entered that day.
Winning the race naturally attracts the headlines, but getting such a substantial proportion of a relatively small team into the prize list adds another dimension to the achievement.
The official Grootmeester classification for Issoudun placed Cornelis seventh, providing another indication of the quality of his overall result.
This is the kind of performance that commands respect among fellow fanciers.

Issoudun Was Part of an Even Bigger 2026 Season
What makes this victory especially interesting is that Issoudun did not prove to be an isolated success.
The official Fondclub Noord-Holland records show that Cornelis returned to the top of the day long distance results on 1 August 2026, winning the race from Orléans.
The published final 2026 standings also place him first in the club’s unassigned day long distance championship.
That gives the Issoudun victory an even stronger significance. It was part of a season in which Cornelis continued to demonstrate his ability to compete at the highest level of this demanding competition.
Every successful pigeon fancier understands that maintaining competitive form over a series of races requires an entire team of pigeons to deliver when it matters.
Cornelis’s results provide convincing evidence of that consistency.
A Performance That Deserves Recognition
The beauty of pigeon racing is that the result is ultimately decided by the pigeons themselves.
Preparation, experience and attention to detail all have their place, but once the birds are liberated, they must complete the journey home.
On 18 July 2026, one outstanding yearling from Nes aan de Amstel completed that challenge faster than every other pigeon in the Fondclub Noord-Holland Issoudun classification.
Seven loftmates joined it in the prizes.
And as the rest of the season unfolded, Cornelis continued to add successful results to his record.
Congratulations to Cornelis van Rijn on a magnificent Issoudun victory and an excellent 2026 racing season.
This is exactly the sort of achievement that makes pigeon racing such a fascinating sport. A winning pigeon, a competitive racing team and a fancier whose results speak for themselves.
Respect from The Pigeon Boss!
