There are trophies in pigeon racing that mean more than a place in the results. They represent years of dedication, countless hours in the loft, and the ability to produce something extraordinary when it matters most.Â
The Golden Wing of the Brugse Barcelona Club belongs firmly in that category.
On Saturday, 17 October 2026, the Belgian long distance racing community gathered at Salons De Vrede in Ichtegem to celebrate the 49th edition of this prestigious competition.
With 774 participants competing for one of the most coveted distinctions in international pigeon racing, the evening honoured the fanciers whose pigeons had delivered exceptional performances in the legendary Barcelona race.
And at the centre of the celebrations stood the combination Jean-Marc Thibaut and Ann-Sophie Boons from Sombreffe, the proud winners of the Golden Wing 2026.
One Pigeon, One Decision, One Golden Wing
What makes the Golden Wing so special is the unique character of its competition.
Unlike a conventional championship based on multiple performances, the Golden Wing is decided by the result of each participating fancier’s first nominated pigeon in the Barcelona race.
That means reputation, loft size and previous achievements offer no guarantee of success. Ultimately, one carefully selected pigeon has to deliver when the moment arrives.
For Thibaut-Boons, that responsibility rested with blue hen BE23-4166185.
Racing from Barcelona on 3 July 2026, the hen was clocked at 08:42:57 the following morning, completing the journey to Sombreffe over a distance of approximately 1,014 kilometres.
Her performance earned an outstanding 2nd National Barcelona against 5,945 pigeons, securing the prestigious Golden Wing for her owners.
The result becomes even more impressive when considering the preparation behind it. The hen had previously competed from Valence in June. Following that race, her nesting cycle was adjusted, and she was entered for Barcelona after approximately twelve days of incubation.
It was a carefully managed campaign that ended with one of the finest honours in Belgian long distance pigeon racing.
And there was another remarkable achievement attached to her name. The same hen had already recorded 151st National Barcelona in 2025, confirming that her 2026 success was supported by an earlier performance in the same demanding classic.

Silver and Bronze With Genuine Barcelona Quality
The Golden Wing winner was certainly not the only fancier deserving the spotlight.
Herman and Wim Michiels from Massenhoven secured the Silver Wing after an excellent Barcelona performance that earned them 3rd National against 5,945 pigeons.
Their first nominated pigeon, BE24-6190451, delivered a performance worthy of the highest recognition. Finishing immediately behind the Golden Wing winner in the Belgian national classification, the pigeon demonstrated just how strong the competition was at the very top.
The Bronze Wing went to Jan and Jens Van Gompel from Mol, whose first nominated pigeon, BE22-6154181, achieved 14th National Barcelona.
But there is an additional reason to admire this particular pigeon.
In 2025, it had already secured 45th National Barcelona. Those two performances subsequently earned the pigeon first place in PIPA’s ranking of the best Belgian Barcelona pigeons over the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
That is the sort of consistency every serious marathon fancier understands and respects.
Three prestigious trophies, three exceptional national performances, and three lofts that have every reason to look back on Barcelona 2026 with pride.
The Champions Behind the Champions
Although the Golden, Silver and Bronze Wings naturally attracted considerable attention, the Brugse Barcelona Club also recognised outstanding achievements across its other competitions.
The combination Oliviers-Devos from Kumtich claimed the two year classification, while Marc Lievens from Balen received recognition for winning the three year classification.
The Vleugeltriomf challenge trophy went to the racing club Sans Peur from Herent, and the Memorial Antoine Vanhove was awarded to Nicu Barbulescu, the Belgian national and international Barcelona winner of 2026.
Another prestigious distinction went to Barca Lady, BE20-6198958, from the Hermans family, winner of the Primus Inter Pares title.
These awards underline something important about Barcelona. A single outstanding race can create a champion, but repeated performances across several seasons reveal something equally valuable: the ability of a pigeon and its loft to maintain quality at the highest level.
Both deserve recognition.

A Celebration Worthy of the Barcelona Tradition
The 49th Golden Wing celebration marked the first occasion on which the awards ceremony was held at Salons De Vrede in Ichtegem.
The programme offered considerably more than the formal presentation of trophies.
Continuing a longstanding tradition, the principal winners were taken by white limousine to Bruges, where they enjoyed a special visit to one of Belgium’s most beautiful historic cities.
Back at the celebration venue, guests enjoyed an evening of dining, entertainment and recognition, with singer Danny Fabry providing the musical entertainment.
The organisation was supported by the dedicated Brugse Barcelona Club committee, including Etienne Meirlaen, Luc Delbaere, Johny Carette, Dirk Deroose, Ruben Lanckriet and Peter Symaeys.
Vleugel Queen Delphine also contributed to the festive atmosphere surrounding the presentation of the awards.
Behind every successful championship celebration stands a group of people willing to devote their time and energy to the sport. Their work deserves appreciation just as much as the results themselves.
Almost Half a Century of Golden Wing History
The Brugse Barcelona Club has built something remarkable.
For 49 editions, the Golden Wing has challenged pigeon fanciers to make one important decision: selecting the pigeon they believe can deliver their finest Barcelona performance.
It is a concept that gives both established champions and smaller lofts the opportunity to compete for the same coveted honour.
That accessibility is part of the attraction. The Golden Wing recognises performance, preparation and the quality of the nominated pigeon, rather than the size of the operation behind it.
As the club approaches its historic 50th edition in 2027, it can look back on another successful year in which Barcelona demonstrated why it continues to command such respect throughout the international pigeon racing community.
For Jean-Marc Thibaut and Ann-Sophie Boons, Herman and Wim Michiels, and Jan and Jens Van Gompel, the 2026 celebration will remain a special chapter in their racing careers.
For everyone who loves this extraordinary sport, it offers something equally valuable: another reminder of why Barcelona, and the people and pigeons who rise to its challenge, continue to inspire generation after generation.
Congratulations to every winner, every participant and the entire Brugse Barcelona Club. The Golden Wing remains one of the great traditions of our sport.
