24 OF 26 PIGEONS REMAINED IN MY LOFT
Let me put the result on the table before I say another word. I started the old bird season with 26 pigeons. After a full campaign of racing, distance, pressure and recovery, I had lost only two. Twenty four warriors were still in the loft.
That is not a statistic I whisper. That is a result I stand behind with pride. In our sport, getting pigeons home consistently is the foundation beneath every prize, every pedigree and every dream. Speed earns applause, but resilience builds a loft.
THE TWO I LOST FACED CAHORS
The only two pigeons I lost were two year olds sent to Cahors, a distance of 925 kilometres. For both pigeons, it was their first marathon race. Cahors is no gentle introduction. It asks hard questions of condition, experience, navigation and character.
Do I like losing them? Never. Every real pigeon fancier knows that empty perch. But the context matters. Two losses from 26 across the old bird season, with both losses coming when two young marathon debutants faced 925 kilometres, tells me that the team remained remarkably intact.
ONLY ONE CLUB NIGHT WITH A PIGEON STILL OUT
There is another fact from this season that speaks just as loudly. I went to the club only once without every pigeon already home. That evening, one pigeon from Bourges was still on the wing. He arrived at 9:30 P.M.
One late arrival from Bourges. One club night with an empty perch. That was it. The rest of the season, the loft filled before I left for the club. For a fancier, that is a magnificent feeling. It means the system is not only built around a single top result. It is built around bringing the team through the season.
